Population Matters- Detroit Relief is Needed

Click the Title for Complete Article

For some cities, it's a race to a million residents, for others it's a slow decline. Crain's Detroit Business is reporting that San Jose, California- Yes, you read correctly- has just surpassed Detroit in population. From the article:
"An analysis of the latest 2004 census figures finds that Detroit has slipped out of the top-10 largest cities in the nation.

Detroit, with a population estimate of 900,198 in July 2004, was supplanted by San Jose, Calif., with 904,522..."

DetroitBazaar and it's owners are fairly young, but even we can remember when it was still the 6th largest city. The cities we were "worried" about were places like Dallas, Phoenix, and San Diego. Well, that's ancient history with cities like San Jose passing us up now. Trivia: San Antonio- you know, the city whose basketball team played the Pistons- is a larger city now as well*

There has indeed been an economic and societal Tsunami that has swept through this city since the 1950's. At one time the city was two million residents meaning more than half of the population has left, leaving it to basically rot. DetroitBazaar feels it is important to relay this information and offer this bit of hope- while it is true the Tidal Wave of destruction has torn our infrastructure up and demolished once great neighborhoods and job opportunities, there is now vacant land available to those who want to reinvigorate areas. With pressure on the city to sell vacant land for reasonable prices, more folks like you and me will be willing to rebuild. It will take time and we may never get back to even a million and a half residents but we can research what it will take to start action now. Lofts are great, but businesses and community is most important. We can build again. Remember, a 50 year landslide doesn't stop suddenly until it reaches the bottom of the valley. We're about there now. Today is a day to invest and pressure the city to clean, purchase, and build. As the city reverses itself, the insanely large tax burdens can come down, the momentum can be reversed, and every resident whether in a loft or a modest home in Southwest Detroit will be better off when they have the ability to purchase back city-owned property that rots, pressure slumlords to get out, and clean the alleys, streets, and parks. Simple things can go a long way. Join DetroitBazaar, by emailing or posting comments. We would love to gather a peaceful army to sweep through Detroit with brooms, lawn mowers, and most importantly, voices. No individual in our city and region is voiceless, remember that! We pull the strings, not corrupt "officials"! We as individuals can team together.

*Population is based on the city itself, not the surrounding metro area or area of dominant influence. Detroit Metro, when including Ann Arbor and Windsor has over 6 million. Over 5 million if Windsor is left out- still well into the top 10. What is a metro region when city it identifies with has been hit by a slow tsunami or earthquake. Thing is, we haven't heard of any mass effort from the Mayor, major businesses, or even organizations to set up a Detroit Relief Fund. DetroitBazaar is working on one, we'll see how far it goes.

Peace to Detroit, Metro Detroit, Michigan, and The Nation from Will and Shawn,

TasteFest, Music, Fun, and a City Challenge!

Check out the bands that are playing for free at the TasteFest this year, and dance the days and nights away Thursday, June 30 - Monday, July 4, 2005. No need for money unless you want to eat (but you can always bring your own food)- and come join the great vibe in a great area. While you're at it head on down to the Bronx for a three dollar Newcastle ;) You might see us challenging other local organizations to a game of pool! So, if you're part of another organization and are willing to put your city pride on the line, why not? Contact us at detroitbazaar@yahoo.com if you're interested in an all out back alley style pool brawl :) Doesn't even have to be at the Bronx. DetroitBazaar will travel. 5th Avenue perhaps? Honest?John's? Maybe something good can come of it for us all, from the businesses involved to the city! Kids, we'll treat you to some water, but we can use some help cleaning up the Cass Corridor while you share your visions. We'll have something for people of all ages in the coming months so don't fret.

This is the first challenge, there will indeed be more to come. It's all in fun, and we plan to head to Belle Isle to relax afterward.

A Brief but Potentially Serious Note Involving Detroit and Michigan Property Owners

June 24, 2005-
"WASHINGTON - Cities may bulldoze people's homes to make way for shopping malls or other private development, a divided Supreme Court ruled Thursday, giving local governments broad power to seize private property to generate tax revenue."

This is from one of many articles hitting the news today. The Supreme Court has expanded the powers of cities(including Detroit) to seize personal property. We've seen some extreme cases around town in the recent past concerning this issue. DetroitBazaar will not comment on the politics of the situation. Rather, we urge you to study and stay informed on this topic as it will most certainly be felt around our city as the power shifts directly into the whims of very wealthy companies and away from solid individuals- rich and poor. Yes indeed, if someone wants your property and the land around it, all they have to do is "convince" the Mayor or state it is in their best interests and BAM, you're house is gone for a Walmart. Be concerned.

Dissent

June 24, 2005-
Well an article in today's Detroit Free Press is claiming Michigan property and home owners have absolutely nothing to worry about. While it is indeed now a state issue, precedent has been established. It is up to the good people of Detroit and Michigan to keep the pressure on government to assure our state laws and rules do not change for the worse- government sponsored land grabs at the expense of private property owners and residents.

End of opinion ;)

Movies, Detroit, and DetroitBazaar

Over the next few months a team of audio and video crews will be on the streets of Detroit shooting footage to document real city scenes for use in a motion picture. The timeline for production is not public- YET. We plan to devote portions of any profits to projects within the city. Check in around the Cass Corridor and help us clean up as well why don't ya? :) . Block by Block, DetroitBazaar style.

Watch too for more trash cans for the people to place their trash, perhaps we'll offer a sponsorship program. It's gotta stop- the litter. We can all make sure the areas we frequent are clean of needles, glass, and debris!
Peace to Detroit, Peace to you!
